The Pirates despite several setbacks during the week, being unable to train on their home ground and being told late Thursday that they would also not be able to play at home recorded an impressive victory leading into the 2010 finals. Thanks to Mt Eliza Football Club a game could be played and the Pirates came to play, with the knowledge that a huge win may give them the opportunity to finish 2nd should results fall their way.
The 1st quarter saw the Pirates determined to do well and with positions in the senior team up for grabs all players were keen to shine. Coach Mark Glenn was happy with the effort and intensity as captain Shaun Payze led with aplomb, attacking each contest as though his life depended on it. Sam Murray played his best quarter for the season and Tom Rees along with Vaughan Clarke continued their fine seasons. Cade Bannister deep in defence and Harry Whitty across half forward also dominated allowoing the Pirates to lead 5.4 to 1.3 at 1/4 time
The 2nd quarter saw Whitefriars lift and place pressure on the Pirates, but to no avail. With Shaun Payze continuing to dominate and Tom Rees liftoing again the Friars were under enormous pressure to stay in the game. Stu Grigg and Ben Southam also were playing well giving the forwards opportunitues to kick goals. Nick Fisher continued to dominate his position at CHB, not allowing any easy forward posessions for the Friars. At half time the Pirates led 9.7 to 4.5
The start of the 3rd quarter saw the Pirates be hit hard by injury, with Harry Whitty and Tom Rees unable to continue, limiting the flexibility available to the Pirates on the bench. Despite this the players dug deep and all lifted as one with Nick Fisher leading ffrom CHB and continuing to provide the Pirates opportunities. In a huge blow full forward James Coghlan also suffered an injury, giving the opportunity to Brett Brisbane coming back into the senior side to dominate at fullforward kicking 3 succesive goals. At 3/4 time the Pirates led 14.9 to 5.6
The last quarter saw the Pirates dominate the game. All the players were acutely aware that a huge win could mean 2nd spot on the VAFA Div 1 ladder. Carl Ashdown and Cade Bannister in the backline, Shaun Payze & Will Coghlan on the ball and Brett Brisbane across half forward all presented a headache for the Friars. The Pirates continued to move the ball forward with a wonderful efficiency and didn't allow the Friars any easy posessions. The scoreboard was looking sad for the Friars as the Pirates continually moved forward whilst the Friars forwards were starved of opportunities. The final margin of 99 points reflected the Pirates dominance on the day and gives the players confidence going into the finals.
