Welcome

WELCOME TO SEASON 2009

Hello Pirate players and supporters,

Welcome to season 2009, a season where we again ask ourselves the question; will this be the season that brings us that elusive senior premiership? Round 1 is set for 18 April 2009 and the seniors will host Old Westbourne on the Harry Mac (aka Apex Park) and our exciting under 19 combination will host Prahran, also at home, on the Reilly Oval.

After an off season of some controversy I am immensely proud to again serve the club as President for the next 12 months. I thank the 2008 committee for their efforts and in particular I thank departing committee members Andrew Atchison (secretary), Sam Ferguson (minute secretary) and Luke Prendergast (general committee) due to family commitments and overseas travel. These men are all true believers in the blue and tan and the immense future that is ahead of us.

I welcome Nick Bowman, Morgan Cole with Louise and Tony Barbour to the general committee and Sally Zetter as our new club secretary. With the reappointment of our senior coach, Mark Glenn, reserves coach Nick Claringbold and the appointment of our new under 19 coach Barry Besanko along with assistant coaches Peter Freeman, Brett McIllwraith and Andrew “Jezza” Powell we have in place a coaching staff that is the envy of the competition.

Combine this with the fantastic support we have again received from the school through Colin Brennan, Steve Brennan, Jason Hammond, Ray Hille and the Pavilion staff and a pre season directed by Theo Messinis which finds us fitter and more focused than ever before and the signs are there for a successful season.

My message to us all is that success will follow effort that is contributed evenly and maintained throughout a long season. Let’s not watch the finals let’s be part of them.

I look forward to meeting the parents, family and friends of all players throughout the season and I encourage everyone to help out with the activities on match day and join in the social events during the year including our Presidents lunch on 9 May 2009.

Hooray and up the Pirates!!

The Pirates hosted Banyule who were sitting 2nd on the ladder and needed a win to secure a double chance. There was a strong northerly wind blowing to the cricket nets end and after Banyule won the toss as expected kicked with the wind. Banyule came out with all guns blazing attacking the man and the ball with a ferocity generally reserved for finals matches.

Tom Coghlan, Stefan Barbour & Ben Southam started well for the Pirates and although they were not able to place any scoreboard pressure on the vistors made it difficult for them to score, although trailing at 1/4 time the effort was ok as the Pirates only trailled by 11 points 1.3 to 3.2

The 2nd quarter saw a seesaw battle of the midfields. First one then the other would take control. Both defences were on top of their respective forward lines making scoring opportunities difficult. The Pirates seemed to be laboring but with 4 goals in red time held a handy 21point lead. Coach Mark Glenn was not happy with the intensity, nor the effort and implored his players to lift. Reed Powney Tom Rees, Vaughan Clarke in a defensive role, Will Coghlan and Brett Brisbane in the ruck all played well but the effort was below par

The 3rd quarter saw the Pirates lift to another level, and although kicking into a strong breeze outscored Banyule 5 goals to 1. The tackling pressure and intensity at the ball lifted andso did the results on the scoreboard. At 3/4 time the Pirates led 13.8 to 7.6 with Al Wood starring Stefan Barbour, Tom Rees & Vaughan Clarke all continuing their good form.

The last quarter was a lack lustre affair. The Pirates kicking with the wind and the game well in hand experimented with their line up, sending Nick Fisher forward and Reed Powney at fullback. The Pirates are now primed for a huge effort against old foe Parade at Bundoora next week

Round 16
News

The Pirates travelled to Glen Eira on a sunny but slightly windy day to face a team sitting on 5 wins , however were the 2nd best performed team in the previous 8 weeks. The Pirates were focused on implementing their game plan, running hard and making it difficult for Glen Eira to obtain easy possession.

The 1st quarter saw the Pirates kick with the aid of a breeze and although they dominated possession were unable to place score board pressure on the Saints. The Glen Eira midfielders were working hard to create opportunities for their forwards and were making it difficult for the Pirates to get their running game going. The Pirates though with superior fitness and greater depth were able to pressure the Saints late in the quarter to lead 5.2 to 2.1. The Pirates were well served by Scott Nicholls across half forward, Al Wood on the ball Stu Grigg & Garth O'Connor-Price across half back.

The 2nd quarter saw the Saints dominate early in general play and on the scoreboard, drawing level several times, throughout the quarter. The Pirates never game up the belief in the game plan and continued to push hard forward with Shaun Payze getting on top of his opponent kicking 2 inspiring goals, Jim Herron being ferocious in the packs Stu Grigg & Garth O'Connor-Price continuing to dominate across half back allowing the Pirates to match the Saints early goals with 5 of their own, maintaining a half time lead 10.9 to 7.4

The 3rd quarter saw the Pirates elevate their running and determination to another level, which the Saints were unable to match. Tom Coghlan continued to improve as did Scott Nichols & Shaun Payze all making it difficult for their opponents to gain possession let alone give the forwards any meaningful scoring opportunities. The Pirates on the other hand were consistent in their approach and although not playing their best football were still able to keep Glen Eira scoreless whilst kicking 5 goals of their own, leading at 3/4 time 15.15 to 7.4

The last quarter saw the game fizzle out to a large predictable win by the Pirates. The game was effectively over but the Pirates continued to run hard as the players are aware that positions within the best 22 come finals time will be difficult to maintain. Coach Mark Glenn was happy with the effort however reiterated that the coming weeks would provide some huge challenges that will determine how good this Pirate team is. Shaun Payze showed enormous courage and leadership throughout the day being clearly best on ground but many players contributed as was evidenced by the 11 goal kickers the Pirates had.

The Pirates tackle 2nd placed Banyule at home next week in what is the final home game for 2009, also seeing the drawing of the monster raffle (some tickets still available). President Phil Coghlan urges all supporters family and friends to come along and support the team in its quest for a special finish to the 30th year of the Pirates existence

Round 16
News
The Pirate hosted Yarra Valley at a windswept Apex Park. The Pirates were decimated by injury at the selection table Thursday with 4 compulsory changes and a late withdrawal from one of the inclusions. But this allowed coach Mark Glenn to continue with his youth policy, promoting Under 19 player Tom Grigg & young gun Scott Nicholls for their first game. Captain Shaun Payze cautioned the players on any complacency as although Yarra Valley sat on the bottom of the ladder they were a very competitive unit.

The 1st quarter saw Yarra kick with the aid of a strong breeze and attack the football with a ferocity expected of a top team. The Pirates seemed lethargic and were taken by surprise as Yarra Valley played tough accountable football. They tackled hard and ran forward at every opportunity giving their forwards many opportunities, enabling them to gain the early ascendancy leading by 7 points at quarter time. The Pirates were well served by captain Shaun Payze, on ballers Al Wood & Rob Stainforth, Garth O'Connor-Price who returned to form with a dazzling display from half back.

The 2nd quarter began with little intensity but the Pirates began to dominate around the ground with Reed Powney, Tim Scarpella & Shaun Payze once again dominating. First gamer Tom Grigg took some telling marks across half back and showed he has the ability to play at this level. Jim Coghlan began to get on top of his opponent kicking 3 goals allowing the Pirates to enjoy a half time lead 7.9 to 4.4. The Pirates were confident at half time that their fitness would allow them to over run the Park Orchard team.

And so it was! The 3rd quarter saw the Pirates increase their intensity into the wind with Tom Grigg & Garth O'Connor-Price continuing to dominate across half back, Tom Coghlan & Tim Scarpella across half forward lifting allowing the Pirates to share goals amongst themselves kicking 7 to Yarra Valley's 1, increasing their lead to 10 goals.

The last quarter was a lack lustre affair with the result beyond doubt and the Pirates suffering further injuries to key players. To Yarra Valley's credit they never gave up trying and were a credit to their supporters as they made it difficult for the Pirates to score. The final margin was a whopping 92 points 20.13 to 6.5. This did not reflect the closeness of the contest, however the superior class of the Pirates was on display as they head towards another finals campaign. Coach Mark Glenn was pleased with the effort in the end as there were 7 players representing the senior side who had played U19's for the Pirates in the past

The Pirates travelled along Eastlink again to do battle with Eltham, a team just outside the top 4 and with their last chance to claim a position in the upper echelons of the ladder. The Pirates were greeted with a huge ground, almost the size of the MCG, but a beautiful setting nestled amongst Eltham's finest gum trees.

The Pirates won the toss again and kicked with a slight breeze. Coach Mark Glenn challenged the playing group to not allow the distractions that occurred pre match with the rooms being so far away from the ground to effect the performance on the ground. The Pirates to their credit again started well with forward Vaughan Clarke kicking 2 goals, Stefan Barbour & Tom Rees doing well in the centre and captain Shaun Payze continuing his stellar season presenting well across half forward. The Turtles did well to hold the Pirates who only held a 16 point lead 4.5.29 to 2.1.13

The 2nd quarter saw the Turtles dominate clearances, but weren't able to capitalise on the scoreboard, however they drew level late in the 2nd quarter. The Pirates who have prided themselves on finishing off quarters well, once again did so, kicking 3 of the last 4 goals, the last at the 39 min mark of a long quarter. Shaun Payze once again dominated across half forward, with Stuart  Grigg on the ball, Jarrod O'Connor-Price & Tom Rees across the middle & Matt Jackson down back. The Pirates were in for a struggle as at half time the lead was only 23 points 8.8.56 to 5.3.33

The Turtles came out steaming after half time and quickly had 2 goals on the board to reduce the margin to just over a goal. The Pirates though lifted a gear with Tom Rees, Chris Coyle in the ruck Al Wood across half back, Ben Southam on the wing & Nick Claringbold across half forward all playing well providing many forward thrusts and dominating the scoreboard with 7 goals whilst the Turtles despite their effort could only manage 6, trailing 15.14.104 to 11.4.70 by 34 points

The Pirates although challenged to 3/4 time felt that an early goal would quell the Turtle challenge and so it was, with early goals to Vaughan Clarke & Shaun Payze who began to show his class at CHF allowing the Pirates a match winning lead that only grew as timewent on. Despite the Turtles best efforts the Pirates kicked 7 majors to Eltham's 2 blowing the margin out to beyond 10 goals 22.19. 151 to 13.5.83.

The win on a finals size ground has given the Pirates additional confidence that they can perform well under any circumstances. Coach Mark Glenn praised the effort and discipline of the group to continue running hard, concentrating and performing the basic team rules under some intense pressure from Eltham, who although outside the top 4 provided a real challenge. He also welcomed back Tom Coghlan who performed well after a long lay off
